My take on how the H-1B fee affects jobs and innovation: time.com/charter/7321....

Thanks to Charter and Time for the opportunity to weigh in.

Glad to see the US Chamber of Commerce speak up on the $100,000 H-1B tax.

I’ve been hoping the business community would speak up more forcefully on immigration issues. It’s a constituency that will be heard by the administration. This is a good start, but only a start.

The recent action by the administration to impose a massive, $100K per-head tax on skilled labor is a huge source of talent uncertainty. As this research shows, one thing you can expect is less investment by firms. This is bad for American workers, businesses, and economies.

If confirmed as true, this would be the height of hypocrisy. The man who so vehemently claims to be on the right side of the law would actually be a crook.

*** NEW RESEARCH ALERT ***

How do firms respond in the face of increased restrictions to hiring skilled immigrant workers?

This article in the latest edition of the American Economic Review is purely theoretical, of course. No connection to reality… 🙄

⚽ With major soccer competitions lik the Club World Cup, Womens Euros, and Gold Cup lighting up our screens, it's a good time to reshare this paper

What happens when soccer (football) clubs hire and field foreign players?

A thread...

A few weeks ago I met the man in the middle of this photo, one of the few remaining Japanese Americans interned during WWII. His family was forced from California and sent to a camp thousands of miles away when he was a child.

A new paper shows the economic damage from tragedies like this one.

📊 These two studies clearly showing that the easier/incentive approach results in stronger social and political integration of immigrants. Allowing foreigners to get citizenship more easily and—crucially—as early as possible after arrival results in more engaged and committed citizens.

🏛️Given today’s Supreme Court ruling and the ongoing challenge to birthright citizenship, it’s more important than ever to know the facts.

A short thread on two important studies…

🇳🇴🇪🇺Using awesome data from Norway, the authors measure native-born exposure to immigrant consumption by industry (see the table) & exogenous changes in that exposure based on the expansion of the EU.

🤑🤑🤑Key finding: A positive and persistent *increase* in wages for native workers. (See the graph.)

🚨🚨🚨Blockbuster paper out today! Bear with me as I explain why this one is so important.

🤔 The *economic* anger about immigration is based on the false notion that immigrants take jobs or lower wages. A major misunderstanding behind this view is that immigrants only increase the supply of labor.

For the first time in years, I’ve cleared my email inbox. It’s a little miracle that’ll probably last 30 minutes tops!

This morning, my Lyft driver reminded me what's at stake in our endless debate about the merits of immigration.

🧵

He fled Afghanistan 8 years ago with his wife, 5 daughters, and a son—escaping the Taliban, who banned girls from school. “That’s not Islam,” he told me. “That’s just them.”

😊 If you want to smile, take a moment to read this letter. Enclosed with it was a lovely graduation photo. Stuff like this reinforces my fundamental belief in the potential and goodness of everyone. 🙏 So thankful for all the hard-working strivers out there. Thank you for filling my soul.

In the long run, immigration will be politically popular because it appeals to our self-interest.

This grassroots perspective matches the evidence in my book: immigrants are positive contributors to the prosperity and vibrancy of communities. The average person sees beyond the fearful rhetoric. They want to fix the immigration system (bad), not toss out immigrants (good).

It's clear that, at the local level, there’s wide and bipartisan support for immigration—not out of ideology but practicality. People like immigrants because they:
🧑‍🏭 Fill jobs and keep businesses running
💵 Spend
🏠 Prevent blight
💰 Start businesses
🏛️ Pay taxes
🫶 Obey the law

🧵 The tragedy of war displaced Hilary Koprowski. The tragedy of policy nearly buried his potential.

I’ve walked by the sign in this photo thousands of times. It’s next to where I work. Just a few days ago, I finally stopped to read it. What I learned holds a profound lesson for our time.

I'm reposting this in light of Marco Rubio's announcement of an "aggressive" effort to revoke Chinese student visas. Many of them stay and disproportionately fuel the our innovation engine. Our need for them is only growing over time. It's not "America first" to kick them out arbitrarily.

“Is emigration good or bad for the sending country?”

This is one of the most common questions I get after presenting evidence on the economic and societal benefits of immigration (for receiving countries).

Here’s an excellent and authoritative summary of the literature on that issue.
