I always felt our paths were bound to cross (s/o Jina DuVernay). Last night, it happened. The conversation felt as familiar as I’d anticipated, and the audience’s energy renewed my ardor for the sheer power of storytelling.

I did not write about it in the book, but I wore a Park Madison NYC T-shirt with their names on it the Decatur Book Festival in 2019, I reviewed “When They See Us” for public and academic outlets, and I spoke their names every opportunity I had, knowing our histories were connected.

In many ways, this was a profound, full-circle moment — professionally and personally. The “Central Park Five” case has been ever-present in my research leading up through my first book.

Best shot I’ve seen of it. Crazy how close it was!
