"National security threat" "Economic disaster"

Not from a thriller, but warnings from the UK Joint Intelligence Committee about climate breakdown and ecosystem collapse.

The analysis has been delayed - the threat hasn't

This open invitation to the @nebriefing.bsky.social was published in the @financialtimes.com today. Please check whether your MP can make it here: www.nebriefing.org and if not ask them to!

We will be briefing on national security, tipping points, food security, nature and more.

This could be a tipping point for decision makers across the UK: we're holding a National Emergency Briefing on the Climate and Nature crisis for national leaders at Westminster Central Hall, and you can help!...🧵

Ah yes, see attached! Trend-wise we can safely assume difficult years ahead due to climate as the crop/climate modelling shows. Open question is when we'll start to see that in the overall figures. Stagnation is also a sign of impacts as all other things being equal we'd expect some increases.

The UK is on track for another year of poor harvests. It's starting to become a familiar story - driven mostly by climate change and a smaller amount of shifting land use...🧵

New data paper out: Ammonia doesn't often make the headlines – but it’s one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss and air pollution in Europe, harming ecosystems and our health. > 90% of it in Europe comes from one source: agricultural fertiliser and manure 🧵

I'm interviewing Partha Dasgupta on his new book "On Natural Capital" at the Edinburgh International Book Festival tonight. If you're in town and free, come along! Partha is a fantastic communicator on all things ecological economics. www.edbookfest.co.uk/the-festival...

This past couple of months have been full of high- & low-speed trains, night trains, buses, and the Eurostar several times! A total of 7,000km ish at a carbon saving of around 96%-ish compared to flying. 🧵

@rozsavage.bsky.social just gave a great talk outlining the Climate And Nature Bill at the @britishecologicalsociety.org the Nature, Farming and Food event.

The Government needs to give it more time for debate and a vote - climate change and nature loss cannot be ignored! @zero-hour.bsky.social

Hi Paul and Rex, we had a look at this point in this paper: www.nature.com/articles/s43... - attached is the pic for Australia. It's current land compared to potential natural vegetation if people cut down their meat to approx one beef burger every week (and there is still plenty of dairy).

Travelling to Stockholm for the first time for the 19th Key symposium on “Planetary Health - connect the dots. What saves the planet saves our health”

Night train Hamburg-Stockholm tomorrow but Eurostar excelled itself with the plant-rich breakfast this morning. Scrambled tofu was a nice surprise!

This was a wonderful read full of beauty, rage, bravery, humour, and much more. It covers the experiences of several scientists in @scientistsforxr.earth. It's human in all the best ways, never maudlin but full of love for this world.

We underestimate one another on climate change!

Such a brilliant important explainer from @dpcarrington.bsky.social on how we underestimate one another's willingness to address climate change and as a result we end up doing less.

Correcting this = more action!

I often get asked by friends/colleagues "how do you enjoy the landscape once you know how naturally deprived it is?"

My answer? I imagine the stunning transformations over short periods and the huge potential across the UK - it's exciting!

Scientific studies and later reporting are revealing efforts made by vested interests to sow doubt and misinformation about the EAT-Lancet report. We don't see as much effort by ag at the COP, perhaps because the EAT-Lancet report touches more on healthy diets...

I think there are some better ways to be communicating about this but you'll have to watch the whole presentation for that!

But we are facing stiff resistance from vested interests (see also the Guardian's reporting today on the pushback to dietary change: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
