Griddled Honey Miso Chicken / Fried Potatoes with Lemon & Soy / Dressed Little Gem
In tonight's home cooking lesson, the 12yo (with guidance) prepared this recent Nigel Slater recipe for dinner.
Key skills: marinading, griddling, chicken safety, poaching in butter, cooking two things at once.

This is a family recipe too. I've tried all sorts of fancy things where you cook a separate special custard first, but this traditional one-tin-wonder is by far my favourite.

Bread & Butter Pudding with Extra Thick Double Cream
A soft custard-soaked bottom holding plump sultanas, and a topping crusted with cinnamon and sugar.
A proper traditional English pudding.

Aldwych was on a one station branch line off the Picadilly - it was rarely used and closed in the late 1980s. In the war, the tracks were taken up and it became one of the best dedicated air-raid shelters. Part of it was also used for storing valuables from Buckingham Palace.

Down in London for an evening MRI scan. Had to bring 12yo as I had no overnight childcare at home. So once the scan was done, we walked downtown from the hospital for a treat - he was in heaven finding Stranger Things had taken over Primark and KFC!! Always balance something bad with something good.

Had a cheese ploughman's sandwich for lunch and was somewhat shocked to see that it has 36 different ingredients in it!

I was today years old when i learned that in America a 'coffee cake' is actually a cake with a cinnamon crumb designed to be eaten with coffee, not, well, a 'coffee cake', made with (and tasting of) actual coffee.

In this day and age, why are Nobel Prizes limited to three people? Why not simply reward all people that made significant contributions to the discovery? Science is teamwork!

Five years ago today. The (then) 7yo was very wise for his age...
"Do you like going to the woods?"
"Yeah, I love the woods"
"Why do you like the woods?"
"Because its sheltered... sheltered from all the noise... and I like it"

Honey Miso Chicken
One of our favourites from my latest book - you must try it! Serve it with what you want, but I raid the Asian supermarket and put it with wasabi crisps, Japanese pickles and rice with shichimi togarashi.

And of course, in the last 50 years, @UniofYork has played a significant role in the modern-day globalisation of the city. Scholars have travelled from all over the world to teach and study in York. In particular, a thriving East Asian community has developed here.

Bettys - an enduring icon of 20th Century York, serving that most British of treats - the afternoon tea - was actually founded by an immigrant from Switzerland. Frederick Belmont, arrived in England in 1919, speaking very little English and headed to Yorkshire almost by chance.
