I agree that learning the history itself is important, but English is a living language and evolves quickly. That word has lost most of its weight in the last fifty years, and imo that's better than remaining painful and hurtful to a substantial population of people.

Language evolves, if the culture moves pasts and forgets what the word was originally used for than that's what it is. If your issue is that impugning people for their lack of intelligence is the problem, just say that instead of digging through etymology for an easy gotcha.
