Kaveh Akbar most recently published a novel, “Martyr!”, but he began his career as a poet. He recommends four collections by Palestinian writers, each of which grapples with the status of being Palestinian in the world.
The Best-Selling Novelist Kaveh Akbar Leans Into His Poetic Roots
With the dawn of a ceasefire in Gaza, the writer reflects on collections by Palestinian poets that don’t lose sight of love and wonder in the face of exile and destruction.

Just some small reflections on challenging sex realist feminism. I hope to share some research findings on this movement soon. Title of this one is 'inspired' by a J K Rowling tweet. For all the noisy parts out there! Keep being noisy! feministkilljoys.substack.com/p/a-noisy-part

Yes, someone on here tried telling me that it was "unfair" to single out data centers when agriculture was consuming far more water than data centers, I still cannot comprehend the level of AI-brain it takes to offer that comparison as valid and useful bc afaik you can't eat the output from LLMs
Power to "AI" is actively damaging power transmission on the US grid. Not "might." Not "will." Right Now Is.

I've been seeing increasing amounts of pushback against people talking about the environmental harms of "generative AI," comparing things like the resource use of factory farming in the US.…
AI Needs So Much Power, It’s Making Yours Worse
There’s a strong link between proximity to AI data centers and higher levels of distorted power in residential areas

This is precisely the ignorance and attitude that contributes to the systematic defunding of the humanities.
Not only do people trained in STEM not know what we do in the humanities, they automatically dismiss it without even bothering to learn what the humanities are about.
How useful has sociology or anthropology in predicting and modeling the socioeconomic forces that gave us Trump? Are those models falsifiable?

We have desperately needed this work for decades, but are the humanities providing it? Is it only a matter of more money?

Not to mention that this turns kids instantly into unpaid laborers in a data mining enterprise and teaches them servility to tech at the get-go, giving up all rights to privacy for the sake of capitalist success.
This was always the goal: remove human teachers from classrooms in schools and universities, except for the very rich who will be able to afford human instruction.

This is why I have only contempt for teachers in higher ed who use AI in their courses--this is what you are actively escalating.
“Kids begin their day with two hours of instruction on standard topics like language, math and science, guided by an AI that continuously adjusts the learning plan based on how the child is doing in each subject.”

New Arizona charter school will use AI in place of human teachers
Unbound Academy, which operates in Texas and Florida as Alpha Schools, has been approved to open a charter school in Arizona with an AI learning model that adjusts kids’ learning plans on the fly.
