Let me suggest one more way to think about this: If Trump had been successful in what he attempted, what would have happened? Either through violence or other extralegal means, he would have held on to the presidency despite losing the election.

One last take on the Ross Douthat column denying 1/6 was an insurrection: The argument relies on a rhetorical device that really demands scrutiny. He tries to create artificial separation between the procedural coup attempt and the mob violence. It doesn't hold up. 1/
