Grant was pilloried by the Clost Cause" idiots, and his name was tarnished. He had a feel for theatre and when on a state visit to Japan, raved about the Nōh Theatre he witnessed.

I heard this story on a podcast from The Folger's Shakespeare Library from James Shapiro, taken from his book "Shakespeare in a Divided America". The reason Grant never performed was his Othello (pres. white) was not comfortable with a man playing Desdemona.

That was a remarkable and memorable production. That went places that I've not seen another production of that show go.

In a good way I should note.

I was happy with what we were able to do with it. It's had a very mixed range of ability and experience, but I think all told it worked out quite well. I believe we managed to both satisfy the audience's expectations of the play while being exploring it from a contemporary standpoint.
