Awaiting orders to invade Texas in 1845, an American army officer suggested they perform a Shakespeare play. They chose Othello. Being all men, a young Ulysses S Grant was cast as Desdemona. Unfortunately, he never took the stage, but he is the only US Pres I know to have been cast in #Shakespeare

The Crucible is an oddity among US written 20th century plays. While seeming naturalistic, it lends itself more to a classical style of performance. It strikes one as easier for a Shakespearean to compass than a method actor - grand nation-framing emotions rule the day

Last moments backstage before a show, stage bare, gentle chattering of the audience, tension before the curtain opens & the 1st lines are delivered. For non-actors, a time filled with potential & excitement; for actors the best time and the worst: waiting, waiting: the readiness is all.

When tackling a theatre classic like #TheCrucible, you face the expectation to continue a tradition. How does one progress from the expectation while still serving the audience? Reassessing what the work means to a contemporary actor is a step to engaging with the contemporary audience.

Nearly done our first week of #TheCrucible here in Hayswood in Corydon (tix still on sale, etc). What is more interesting is to observe the evolution of the group & storytelling. The sobriety of the opening performance has given way to performative joy & energy, despite the heavy themes
