I made a cake! A vanilla sponge cake with ginger cream and chocolate canache. This is a cake I've eyeing for about a decade after seeing Gordon Ramsay's video on it. This year I finally made it as a belated birthday gift for myself!

I'm at Gen Con (for the first time) if anyone else is and wants to say hi. Most of my time will be spent at Booth 2708.

30. Plays are media right? I saw Anything Goes at the Shaw Festival in Niagara On the Lake. I haven't enjoyed most plays I've been to, but this one blew me away. With amazing singing, dancing, and acting paired with a live orchestra, I loved the first act and liked the second act well enough.

18. Clair Obsur: Expedition 33 starts off strong and improves over time. As my playthrough continued, my opinion slowly went from "this is pretty good" to "this is great" to "everyone should try this game". There is a ton of subtext in the dialogue and acting, which most games just don't do.

17. After getting it for Christmas last year I finally started Citizen Sleeper last month. To no one's surprise it was incredible. The excellent writing, atmosphere, and art pulled me along. The early game friction of day-to-day survival was extremely engaging, even as I eventually grew past it.

15. Short Circuit was an enjoyable, if strange, film that absolutely feels embedded in the era it released in. There were a few lines in it that felt very smartly written, and others that fell flat for me.

14. Blue Prince is a fascinating puzzle box of a game. It starts you off with a specific 'main quest' but slowly introduces smaller mysteries and puzzles that transform the experience from 'do I get to the goal or not' to 'which new thing might I discover or solve today'. I really enjoyed it.

13. I bounced off Maneater's demo a few years ago, but when I tried the full game a month or two ago I loved it. A relatively short shark-based action game with RPG-like mechanics and a strong sense of power progression.

12. Demon Lord 2099 had a very strong premise and first episode, but then doesn't deliver on much. It has some good lines spread throughout its 12 episodes, but the animation quality falls off quickly, and the pacing bounces between slice-of-life slow and rush-to-finale fast and then back again.

11. I'm not the biggest fan of Invincible overall. I don't like how grim or gory it is, and while I'm somewhat knowledgeable on superhero comics, I'm not a big enough fan to enjoy the show in contrast. Despite that, I still enjoyed the show's third season and will likely keep watching.

10. I only managed to sit through three episodes of Metallic Rouge before giving up. It has some pretty fight scenes, but everything else about it is SO messy. Pacing, character motivations, dialogue, and plot are all dizzyingly inconsistent.

9. Age of Wonders 4 is a big improvement over 3 to me, with more interesting battles and involved city-building. I *wanted* to like 3 more than I did, but 4 feels like an upgrade in every way.

8. Civilization 7 was a lot of fun to finish my first game. I really enjoyed the new design. That said, there are so many important features and pieces of information missing that I'm going to wait a year or so to try it again.

7. Hexarchy is a fun mini-Civilization game with some deckbuilding elements. It takes roughly 30-60 minutes to finish a game, and provides a good light strategy experience. I wish it went beyond Renaissance tech but suspect that just wasn't feasible while keeping the game's scope remotely sane.

6. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a very polished and enjoyable metroidvania. The story was very 'anime' for good and for ill, and I do wish there were *slightly* more things to do once you unlock all abilities, but it was still a very fun game that I liked playing a lot.

5. Darkdawn is the final book of the Nevernight trilogy, a grim adventure story set in a world similar to Dishonored or Blades in the Dark. The prose was extravagant and gruesome, the characters were strong and engaging, and the plot was solid. I only wish the final book had another surprise or two.

4. Frostpunk 2 was a great sequel that felt like an evolution of the first game that played with the same ideas but took them in a different, yet related, direction. I finished the main story, and eventually got tired of managing different groups in endless mode, but really enjoyed my time playing.

3. Beastars Season 3 (Part 1) was good, but by the end I felt like it jumped the shark a bit. Some of the things introduced in later episodes felt like they weren't bad, but didn't really fit the existing show as established. I really like parts of he show, but probably won't continue.

2. Witch Hat Atalier is a gorgeous manga. While it doesn't hold the record of raw detail, the visual design and style evokes a feeling of custom handicraft, which is also what magic itself often feels like in this story. It shows joy and friendship built on a foundation of trauma and turmoil.

1. Metaphor Re:Fantazio is a game I started after Christmas and beat a few days ago, playing almost nothing else during that time. It was a solid JRPG with an engaging world, story, mechanics, and style. The job system is good, and all party members stayed relevant over the story.

Last night I made a pesto baked brie with turkey bites in puff pastry.

(To new followers, I only post food I made).
