As an objective watcher trying to make it through the AFI Top 100, not even a reviewer, I'm reminded that the musicals are in a class altogether their own. Take "Cool" as an example...

This song manages to balance imperceptibly between silly, serious, emotional, nervous, funny, cringy... incredible

Within minutes the film asks you to accept: 1) grown-ass actors are rough street teenagers 2) stylistic choregraphed dances are actually a dangerous fight scene...

Get past the awkward hurdles and the film is very rewarding: themes of race and class prejudice, witty and memorable songs, great sets
