I was working in a ~$40M ARR business when, deep into board prep one night, we realized there was a ~$4M leak in the funnel somewhere between Closed-Won Deals and New Customer Starts.

But for spiciness to be tasted, you need a second ingredient: Bravery 💪

Every brand says they are playful, but very few are brave enough to put a playful monkey high-five into a serious SaaS product for a mission-critical function.

If you were a marketer in 2010, this high-five brings-back all the feels. First, exhilaration of having just hit-send on a big email campaign. Next, there’s a touch of fear, knowing you might face embarrassment if there’s a typo you didn’t catch.

Founder-led growth using LinkedIn/X has gotten extremely competitive. But one person who’s cracked it is Nick Huber, growing from 0 to 388,000 followers. My team spent over 20 hours reverse-engineering his playbook. We dissected his 10 highest-performing posts, his 5 biggest follower growth-spurts.

If everything’s a priority, nothing is. Great growth leaders focus on what matters—and let the rest burn. Here’s how to do it right: ⤵️

Reid Hoffman introduced me to this “letting fires burn” concept in an interview with Selina Tobaccowala, former President and CTO of SurveyMonkey.

Of all the roles in the C-Suite, I’d argue CMO is the one that’s changed the most drastically. And if you’re not adapting to this new way of thinking about the CMO’s role, you’re setting your business up for failure.

👉 Lesson: You have limited number of users flowing through your funnel and you have a limited number of tests you can run in a year. If you want to learn fast, test dramatic changes. 🔑
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
We run our next test. This time, because the difference b/w the variants is more dramatic, the delta in conversion rates gets “wider.” CTR changes from 5% ➡️ 7.5%.

Run the numbers again, and voilà—now it’s statistically significant.

Because the sample size was small we got results in just 2 weeks.
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
📩 Scenario # 3: Moderate Sample, Massive Change, Success!

20 weeks was a long time to wait for a test result. What if we went back to a moderate sample size, but we tested something more dramatic?
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
This time, we keep the experiment and CTR gains the same, but we kept the test running 10X longer to get a 10X bigger sample size.

💡 Throw it in a calculator again: Still not statsig!
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
📩 Scenario # 2: 10X Sample, Same Change, Still Failed to Learn

“I guess we need to run the test much longer.”
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
And you have 50 conversions in the Control, and 55 in the Experiment.

💡 Throw it in a calculator: Not statistically significant.
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
📩 Scenario # 1: Moderate Sample, Moderate Change, Failed to Learn

You make a small optimization to the variant email, boosting CTR by 10%. Sounds like a solid improvement, right?

Overall that would mean your CTR improves from 5% ➡️ 5.5%
January 20, 2025 at 4:08 PM
But if you’re smart, you’ll use this time to reevaluate how you’re doing things, and you’ll find opportunities to achieve the same impact despite having a scaled-back team.

Getting caught in an economic downturn is certainly not fun.
January 15, 2025 at 4:47 PM
As a startup leader, you may be inclined to focus on cutting costs and cutting corners.

But in times like these, there's one area you should absolutely invest in.👇

Last month, I had the pleasure of co-hosting our first ever Brooklyn Operators & Founders meetup.

The turnout, conversations, and connections exceeded all expectations.
January 14, 2025 at 4:09 PM
Does this sound familiar: a change that should take an engineer half a day to complete instead requires 3 weeks and 3 meetings just to get into the queue. 😵

It doesn’t have to be this way.

If you want my templates for Monday or Notion, comment “ICE” and I’ll send them your way. 🚀

It’s the end of the year, and a lot of growth/mktg teams are in planning mode. If you’re in the same boat, I highly recommend the ICE framework.

I couldn’t find an ICE template I liked for Notion or Monday, so I created two of my own. 👉 Comment “ICE” and I’ll DM you a copy.
