If Trump can’t recite Bible verses by memory, he’s like most Americans. But if he’s okay condemning Americans to starvation or torture in a foreign dungeon, what’s the point of invoking the Christian faith on Easter? What exactly does he think religion means? Practicing Christianity requires responsibility. The teachings laid out by the God of Abraham and recorded in the Bible ask believers to put aside their own secular desires and serve a higher calling. a belief in a God who asks nothing of them but who can be invoked as a sort of indulgence for engaging in whatever vices you want. Well, what if the Left didn’t exist? What if there were no Democrats? What would you believe in? Because increasingly it seems like the brand of conservative Christianity embraced by the Republican Party just has no content at all. It’s just cultural clothing worn by politicians, empty words thrown out there matched with no commitment to action.

If you look closely at any policy championed by the New Right, you’ll see that it’s about online status. It’s about proving that America’s leaders can simply pack migrants off to a foreign dungeon whenever they feel like it. But for the New Right, there is no perimeter and there is no interior — immigrant crime in Sweden matters far more than whatever is happening next door in your actual physical town.

Still, the video of Trump and Vance berating Zelensky is obviously not fake. You don’t have to believe in any conspiracy in order to see America’s leaders bullying a man whose country is in desperate danger of conquest and brutalization. You don’t have to decide which TikTok influencers to trust in order to see America turning away from a country that was invaded and turning toward the invader. You can see the arrogant, petulant tone of America’s President and Vice President — their bullying, crude demands for mineral wealth, their insistence that anyone who wants their help grovel before them and kiss the ring. You can see JD Vance shouting in Zelensky’s face, accusing him of not saying “Thank you” (even though Zelensky has thanked the U.S. many, many times). You know that invading other countries is wrong, and you know what bullies look like.

Basically, I think there are three things we should take away from this disastrous event: 1. It’s now clear that the U.S. has chosen a set of leaders who are deeply immoral, and who cannot be expected to obey any norms of common decency. 2. U.S. foreign policy has changed dramatically from what it was from 1945 to 2024; the U.S. is now effectively a gangster state. It’s not clear whether this can ever durably revert back to the way it was. 3. Trump’s meeting with Zelensky also emphasizes how clumsy his administration is, and how they’ve already started making mistakes.

Trumpism is an embrace of America as a Great Power and a rejection of America as a Good Power, in all its forms, both domestic and internationally. More than that, it is an ideological embrace of America as a Great Power, that this is everything America should be, and an ideological rejection of America as a Good Power, that this is something America should never be. I don’t think Trumpism is inherently evil. It’s the pursuit of great power for great power’s sake … good and evil have nothing to do with it. But I absolutely think this is a tragedy, because the pursuit of great power for great power’s sake transforms every American policy, both foreign and domestic, into a protection racket of one form or another.
