Peter Wilken, author of Dim Sum Strategy & 10 Commandments, often mentions Cirque du Soleil as an example of a business that "owns a territory" in people's minds. They are an excellent example of this, but what I'm reminded of is my time at EXPO '86. I was fortunate

was subtly fostered as early as the late 1800s. An infamous example was the Phoebus Cartel, a 1920s-1930s international agreement among major light bulb manufacturers, who plotted together to reduce the lifespan of lightbulbs by over 50% to ensure more sales.

What goes into producing one finished hour of audio? Generally, for straightforward nonfiction, from 6 to 10 hours of work by a team of people. For fiction? More like 10 to 12 hours for one hour without any bells and whistles. Adding a soundscape and music adds hours of work.

It's not just common sense; it is environmentally responsible. It's bad enough that everything we buy has built-in obsolescence, forcing us to replace items every 1 to 5 years. Even houses are not built to last. The result of 100 years of planned obsolescence.

"Men of letters will not be called Writers in the time soon to be, but rather, Narrators. Little by little the taste for style and for pompously decorated phrases will die away, but the art of utterance will take on ..."

I agree with you about people not reading, but it's not "the younger ones."

"The 45-54 age group has the highest number of non-readers: 60.9%."

As for whether audiobooks count as reading, research shows that they do.

This edition includes a new intro by poet Bernard O'Donahue and 11 original colour images by Gráinne Fordham. I work on this when time permits.

It occurred to me recently that, as I have to print the entire book in colour, anyway, why not use colour throughout?

But is this too much?

I'm looking for advice. I've been working on a project: print/ebook editions of a book that combines both of W.B. Yeats' Irish fairy tale compilations. This will accompany our audiobook version read by Gerard Doyle.

My mom loved jigsaw puzzles. We (kids, grandkids, great grandkids) all remember working on them with her, which was always accompanied by fun conversation.

I've been thinking about her & adding jigsaw puzzles to our site. She would have loved this one.

We offer a recording of Caliban and the Witch. There were some issues in our original recording, & so we re-recorded it, providing the narrator more support. Fascinating book! You can get it directly from us - as an Indie publisher we always appreciate that!

One of the things I loved about producing this book was putting together the music. Heather Henderson, who narrated & co-produced, suggested that, as the radio was so important, we hear music from the era. I became obsessed with the idea & it resulted in one of my favorite reviews. :)

The author quotes primary sources throughout. We wanted listeners to hear this. Jesse Lipscombe delivered!

One customer wrote "myriad narrators bring history to life" & another, "this featured what sounded like a cast of Black voices reading quotes. It was delightful, & I adored it."

As I get ready to put on an audiobook & do some housecleaning, I thought I'd post a few suggestions from our catalogue for relaxed listening. Something to take your mind off of the craziness we are all bombarded with daily.

First up, some books about animals, because we LOVE animals. Here are my 2.

She is. Henry is very handsome, too. He's also a rescue - he was starving when we got him. He was so skinny I thought he must be a Doberman cross! But now he looks like a normal German Shepard. So, it's Handsome Henry and Pretty Patsy. :)

Many chose #veganism for the planet. But cutting out all meat is a deal breaker for many.

On the other hand, we in North American eat far too much meat. Eleanor Boyle offers sound reasons to reconsider our diet choices & diminish the amount of meat we eat.

When one is stuck in the patter of yo-yo dieting, food obsessions, & food cravings, it is hard to find a way out. Many don't take the notion of food addiction seriously.

Dr. Vera Tarman's excellent book provides another path to overcoming 'food addition.'

At some point in her twenties, Sarah was over 300 lbs. In her early 30s, she went on a serious diet/exercise kick & lost lots of weight. Here we are in the kitchen together sometime in the early 80s.

But this weight loss didn't last. After having a son in her late 30s, the weight started to return.
