Just days ago, the EU extended an order requiring X to preserve all data related to its algorithms through 2026. By opening the code to the public, Musk is seemingly attempting to get ahead of these investigations by allowing independent developers to audit the system themselves. Beyond regulation, the platform is also battling a massive surge in automated bot activity. Recent reports indicate that crypto-related bot messages on X spiked by over 1,200% in a single day, leading to widespread down ranking of legitimate content. Musk believes that moving to an open source model will help the community identify these biases and help the platform fight back against "spam-like conduct." If Musk follows through on his 7 day deadline, it could set a major new precedent for transparency across the entire social media industry.
