I recently heard an interpretation of Hayashi Yoken's motivations in his arson of Kinkakuji as being a reaction to its commodification for tourism. This may not have been his actual motivation, but visiting Kinkakuji today one can certainly see how this motivation is plausible.

Guénon explains the sphinx as having a dual symbolism that is of great significance for politics. The leonine body with a human head represents both the union of the principles of contemplation and action, and the subordination of the latter to the former.
