did anybody else in the US watch The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries and feel a visceral jolt when the whole pilot turns out to hinge on the lack of safe access to abortion in 1920s Australia and the women characters’ rage about it

like “oh wow okay this show was NOT made in this country”
Here is my most damning indictment of romance as a genre: we are currently living in a time when stalkers, rapists, and murderers are romance MMCs, but I doubt I could name more than 10 books in the whole history of the genre where an FMC has an abortion.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

This happened years ago in crisis time (2 weeks), but there has to be a German word for being horrified but also unsurprised by a statement revealing hypocrisy.

The Productivity Commission out there saying that we can improve productivity by not paying workers.

Nice discussion, some thoughts:

I read romance because I know it'll have a happily ever after / happy for now, if they don't have that they aren't a romance genre.

Fantasy always had sex scenes, historically there was a good chance they'd be icky, or r*pey. Would love warnings about that.
Folks, to be clear, I have no bias against, or complaint about, romantasy in any way, shape or form. I'm happy readers who want it have it, I'm glad its writers are seeing their books sell, and I'm happy bookstores have titles that bring folks into stores. I think it's great.

Absolutely, the roll out of vaccines had a huge impact on child mortality. Prior to that, though, efforts in public sanitation, clean water and food safety already improved survival, especially in infants.

Safety laws are written in blood. Defunding the regulatory bodies will kill people.

I find the narrative "Greens were comprehensively rejected" weird. I vote in Brisbane and the primary Greens vote stayed remarkably stable. It's the shift in LNP (and Ind) to ALP that made the difference. This certainly proves that Greens voters were pretty happy, good work Stephen Bates.

When I work from home I like to make my morning tea with leaves in a ~2 cup pot. While it is brewing, I boil water again, so that after I pour the first cup I can refill it and let it steep again until lunchtime when I remember I did that, and wonder if it's worth microwaving the over-brewed tea.

Or, hear me out, the eyes of one who has walked out of hell and at the last moment lost their beloved for good and are seriously pissed off about it. Or, sure, beautiful.
Brown Cuckoo-doves have beautiful eyes.

I was looking forward to climate change drying us up, a future of drought and fire, but it looks like in our corner of Australia it'll be buried in mould and moss and washed out to sea. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01...
La Niña conditions underway in unusual summer appearance
The current edition of La Niña is not playing by the rule book — for only the second time in 75 years its onset has arrived in the middle of summer.

Last week the weight of "I don't wanna set up a new social media" was finally outweighed by "Twitter is a painful bigoted pit of arseholes and ads, stop ignoring it" as several million others did the same.
Which makes me on trend.
This is massively uncomfortable and weird for me. Who even am I?

I spent some of my precious fucking around on the internet before being late to work time making egg and stuff things. I love how they inflate in the oven then collapse to tiny weird shapes as they cool.

First of all, hi.

Second of all, how do we make the BOM get on here.

Third of all, no, really, hi guys!
