I made a thing today! @stoff.bsky.social Nerd-Sniped me this morning with a shader quandary, so I ended up making this thing, a Surface-based Half-Tone shader! It's not great, but I think the effect is neat, and I'm releasing it as a free download in the comments below!

The effect when plonking the other waves back in, though, is encouraging. It's not PERFECT, but the fact that lerping the directions of the waves alone seems to work without going completely corrupted means my idea of integrating Flow Mapping into Gerstner MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK.

It still REALLY dislikes it when I try to interpolate wavelengths. Seems that adjusting the wavelength at all causes the wave phase to go absolutely ballistic, causing this whackadoo corruption in the transition zone.

What in the goddamn...

Trying and failing to blend two different Gerstner presets together based on a range splat. Making interesting shapes, though!

I have been making some decent progress on my Ocean Shader's new Wave Editor. Currently, it's just a port of the auto-generator script, but now includes preview screens to make sure lower resolution settings still look coherent.

Next up, making the Wave Settings editor!

The previous version's normal calculation was to just resample the Gerstner waves at points around the target vertex to find the slope between vertices. It was slow as hell, but dead-simple. This one has been DESTROYING my brain because Partial Derivatives in Pseudo-Tangent Space go BRRR.

A note on the physical coloring part: The previous version just lerped from Cyan to Deep Blue as the water got deeper. This time, I'm playing with Beer-Lambert based math (more math! D:) to simulate the water color directly rather than trying to manually tune things. It's not perfect, but it's neat!

Making progress on lighting my redux ocean shader! As mentioned in a previous post, this version reconstructs surface normals entirely differently from my previous one, and I am TIRED OF VECTOR MATH NOW! Reflections and physical coloring are in now though!

Who... exactly... thought this was a good notation to make array casting "simpler" in .NET/C#? I'm bringing an app up to .NET 8.0 and... some of these changes are just like.. WHY?

Yes it's shorter, but it is for sure not more readable!

A fun note about writing yourself an updater for your app: If your updater overwrites itself with a version from your server that doesn't do anything, try not to be surprised when running the updater again... doesn't do anything.

Fun times at the Chicken & Egg factory.

Been trying to get better at compositing and lighting in #Blender and been playing with some old models to see if I can't "upgrade" them a bit. Here's the Sword I made a bit ago with some attempts at "Photorealism" applied. Still got a long way to go.
