It seems that my collection of ancient, but lightly used, 4gig USB2 thumb drives are failing. One of them had a folder with 49GB of garbage files, but seems to work after a full format. Another went read-only during writing to it, and a full format failed. Ordered some better ones.

Finally installed Pimega4 on my Pi400. Now just need to find some time to explore it.
