Some of my favorite rocks from my most recent tumble.
Black and brown rock with triangular/geometric patterns in it. Triangular, almost tooth shaped tan rock. The top of the rock is red. Rock with internal cracks. The color is mottled and is in shades of brown, red, and small greenish areas. Grayish green rock with horizontal striping throughout. The stripes are in shades of mostly blueish green and some tan.

H5N5 Avian influenza confirmed in Grays Harbor County resident First detection of this strain in a human, risk to the public remains low Olympia - A Grays Harbor resident who was hospitalized with influenza symptoms in early November has been confirmed to have influenza A H5, a type of avian influenza. Additional testing shows the virus to be H5N5, an avian influenza virus that has previously been reported in animals but never before in humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and DOH currently considers the risk to the public from avian influenza to be low. The person is an older adult with underlying health conditions and remains hospitalized. The affected person has a mixed backyard flock of domestic poultry at home that had exposure to wild birds. The domestic poultry or wild birds are the most likely source of virus exposure; however, public health investigation is ongoing. The Washington State Department of Health is working with the local health department and the Washington State Department of Agriculture to complete exposure and animal health investigations. Public health disease experts have not identified any increased risk to the public.

It reminds me of lace. Or maybe like, feathers?
Off white, somewhat translucent rock. There are more opaque streaks through that are sort of off-white, beige, with maybe a tinge of green? The opaque parts give an almost feathered or lace like effect.

Quite a large fellow and needs some edges worn down still. But the colors are gorgie gorgie.
Somewhat large rock that takes up over half my palm. It is mostly orange, but has some random diagonal white streaks and some white splotches.

Black rock, that is ovular in shape, with large sections of orange and off white. Medium sized, rounded oval shaped rock that is a reddish pink color. There are two white streaks and smaller spots of white within. White rock with small streams of a dark brown/black color through it, and some smaller bits of orange. Tan and orange rounded rock. It looks like it has surface level cracks on it, but they are actually deeper

Reading a book called, "Botanical Revolutions: How Plants Changed the Course of Art" by Giovanni Aloi and idk why this part is cracking me up.
But not everyone agreed that art should provide accurate representations of reality. During the eleventh century, toward the end of the Song dynasty (960-1279), the poet, politician, writer, calligrapher, painter, and aesthetic theorist Su Shi landed in hot water for subverting the traditional representation of bamboo. Having run out of black ink, he decided to depict the plant in red ink left over from exam marking. His colleagues asked him, "Where have you ever seen red bamboo?" to which he replied, "Where have you ever seen one as black as ink?" Eager to make his point, Su Shi argued that anyone who regards painting as a realist pursuit has "the understanding of a child." This exchange got him banished from Emperor Huizong's court. I'm currently reading, "Red Flag Warning: Mutual Aid and Survival in California's Fire Country"

These words from an interview with Kailea Loften just really struck a chord with me.
"We continue to be fed this narrative that everything will go back to normal and that we can continue living as we always have. I think we're all selling ourselves short when we believe this narrative. It's comfortable, and it's no longer grounded in reality. We're experiencing collapse alongside growing pains. I want to live to see what's on the other end of who and what we're all growing into."

Maybe I'm late to this one? But I just finished the audiobook version of this book, and found it asked some really great and tough questions. If other white folks are looking to do the work, this is a great option.
