Light would play a special part in the symbolism of Graves, at times seemingly trapping animals in webs of fluorescence, or in another case, a hibernating animal in a mandala-esque form radiates a disc of pure pink light.

Graves would gain initial attention thru his award winning "Moor Swan", a moody symbolic self portrait that would indicate the importance of bird motifs thru out his career.

Taking cues from Native and Eastern art motifs, as well as building upon ideas put forth by previous regional artists of the Impressionist school (See "Nootka Island" by Gustin below), Graves would seek to transcend the then ascendant Surrealism thru his own unique symbolism.
