I assume I would've been more tolerant of the book in high school, based on my experience with A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: I identified with Stephen Dedalus when I was 17, but a decade later I didn't even particularly like him.

That may also say something about me . . .

Yeah, I definitely read Catcher in the Rye too late. I was in my 20s, and I thought Holden Caulfield was about 80 percent twerp.
