For this premiere, the entrance of Grauman’s Chinese Theater was covered by an “enormous black canvas ceiling” due to wartime dimout restrictions.
Los Angeles Times article from Sep. 3, 1942 describing the premiere of “The Pied Piper.” Article begins: The enormous black canvas ceiling which canopied the entrance to Grauman's Chinese Theater last night, keeping the radiance of the bright lights from the sky, enabled the fans in bleachers and lined across the street to get an excellent view of their screen favorites as they entered to see "The Pied Piper." Proceeds of the Hollywood premiere of the picture will go to the Naval Aid Auxiliary. Rudy Vallee and his Coast Guard band provided the music for the arriving guests and the patriotic spirit was enhanced by the presence, as guests of hon-or, of Floyd Patten and his youngest son, Wayne. The Patten family, consisting of the father and his eight sons, are recent additions to the Navy. STAR ENTERTAINS Monty Woolley, star of the film, entertained with a theater party, followed by supper at Mo-cambo for Ida Lupino, Bette Davis and Arthur Farnsworth, Sir Charles and Lady Mendl, Mary Pickford and James Beck, Jeanette MacDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brackett.

I checked my notes and TCM has not aired “In Our Time” since August 2020—over five years ago! It’s an excellent romantic wartime drama. Not only does it have Lupino and Henreid, but also the great Alla Nazimova and Michael Chekhov.
