Thanks for sharing! Beautiful! Orvieto is a very memorable place. Beautiful, and also with long, interesting history. Founded by Etruscans, if I recall, seated at top of a hill, but has water table right under town due to limestone layer underneath it. #photography #architecture

Wesleyan's President Roth was right about all this, IMO. "Dialogue" rather than rejecting is doing the authoritarian's work for them.

But if you sit there and worry about the sociology department and whether Near East studies is really antisemitic, I think you’re doing their work of authoritarianism.” Most Popular Many in the room applauded. At Wesleyan, Roth said, he’s tried to increase intellectual diversity and raise awareness “about the political biases that undermine faculty hiring, that undermine classroom discussions, that undermine the education we want to offer.” But he said that “right now that would be like talking about needing a better milkshake when the house is on fire,” or like complaining about corruption in Ukraine’s mining industry or the University of Kiev’s anthropology department talking too much about settler-colonialism. “The federal government is trying to destroy civil society by undermining the legitimacy of colleges and universities, of law firms—entertainment is on deck, and journalism,” Roth said. “And so while we twiddle our thumbs and talk about reforming the university, people who want to destroy the university are doing so not because we don’t have enough Republicans at the top business school or Wesleyan’s department of mathematics. They want to destroy the university because that’s how you claim more executive power.”

Quite possible. I highly recommend Yuval Noah Harari’s book, “Nexus” about the history of information networks, and touches on the comparisons you raised to railroads/telecom, printing press and other inventions.
AI threatens to really compound the dangers but it also may threaten autocracies, too.

But it would be good if more GOP leaders realized the need to bring down the heat, and also were as clear about some of the contributing factors:

A good complementary book is "Nexus" by Yuval Noah Harari. He describes the history of information networks, of storytelling, myth making and "world" making that move people at scale (like Haidt's discussion of religion in the latter chapters).
