That's fair, when I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer (previously win10) I had to manually download and install the drivers by tethering over Bluetooth. Hope you can try again some other time :)

Here's how it went for me:
1. Buy a used Dell Latitude E5450
2. Put in a new SSD and 16gb RAM
3. Install Ubuntu 22.04
4. Frolic in the meadows.

I found this out very quickly when I switched some tasks I could've sworn were 3x faster and no stutters with my 7900X3D

Performance is about the same really only the memory matters. Just use the professional driver's here: www.nvidia.com/en-us/driver... and www.amd.com/en/resources...

You'd likely want an AM5 mobo for longevity's sake paired with a 7000 or 9000 series processor. (maybe 8000 if your budget is tight) As for the graphics department anything below 350 pound Radeon is best but above Nvidia is better.
