The chemical room: where I go for some quiet time while weighing minuscule quantities of flour into hundreds of tubes. Surprisingly Zen 🧘‍♀️ 👩‍🔬

One of my favourite things about @galaxyproject.bsky.social is these "do some citizen science while your job runs" opportunities. I'm getting very good at sexing marmalade hoverflies! 😅

A huge thanks to @wmarler.bsky.social for running a fun and informative animation workshop yesterday. Truly squeezing the juice out of Power Point! I particularly loved the toaster animation ☺️🍞🌾❤️

OK, let's look at soluble fibre now. When looking at means, the dried-and-milled samples seem to measure a tad higher than the ground samples. But it also appears as if the standard deviation is larger in the ground samples, meaning repeated measurements vary more. (4/6)

Here are the results for total fibre analysis. Blue bars are samples ground in liquid nitrogen and red bars are samples freeze-dried and milled (data is mean +/- standard deviation). For total fibre, there doesn't seem to be a measurable difference. Phew! Good news!! (3/6)

The importance of sample prep: this is the same sample of bread 🍞. On the left it was ground in liquid nitrogen with a pestle in a mortar. On the right it was freeze dried and milled in a centrifugal mill. Will it affect my analysis? (TBC)
