Stylidium are so cool. A slowmo video I took during fieldwork showing the flower being triggered

I’m sharing because this gave me a chuckle

@simonmaechling.bsky.social Agreed. It’s time for scientists (and all experts) to stand up, stand together, and get loud. Without someone communicating the science, the science can’t speak for itself #SciComm

Haven’t finished reading, but seems interesting. Communications is key for influence. #SciComm

“Institutions unprepared or slow to engage have repeatedly been outflanked by bad-faith actors who were weak on facts but had superior communication tactics.”

Too many to choose from, but daylilies (Hemerocallis) will always be my first love

I remember the first time I saw one at Kings Park. A closeup I took of the new leaves

Glad to see this got answered. I was reminded of the post after seeing lulo (Solanum quitoense) in Colombia. It has purple hairs in the leaves, sometimes has spines, and is very delicious

Also, the two research reviews cited hardly support her thesis around medical intervention and ultimately conclude more research is needed re depression/suicide. While instances of depression/suicide may be unclear (fails to highlight reason for such feelings), one states quality of life improves.

@jaycapasso.bsky.social at Watermelon Variety Demo field day. I love when people get to see and experience fun and interesting varieties they wouldn’t typically see… in this case the yellow watermelon

Very good resemblance to real water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes). Apologies for my poor picture

Straight from the ThermoFisher website on “What’s So Rare About Rare Earth Elements?” (www.thermofisher.com/blog/mining/...)

I may be over 18,000 km away 11,000+ miles), but the next generation of #daylilies must be grown. I’m lucky my mom is willing to make crosses and grow seedlings for me while I’m away. There are 18 trays that look like this and have over 3,000 seeds planted. 🌺

Colorful magic with anthocyanins… just add acid 🧪

Long shot question for the science community 🧪 Does anyone have a recommended method/instrument/software for getting CIELAB colorspace values from liquid flower extracts?

I have yet to see a honey possum, but Banksias are wonderful plants.

Unfortunately they are under threat of dieback, caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi.

Have you considered a tissue layer promoter w/ CRISPR to KO Chlorophyll and attempt stable variegation patterns? Always been interested in the idea given how unstable variegation can be.

I have to get in on this #BloomScrolling

This is a post from @victorshi.bsky.social over on the other place. While this is a political take, it’s also an important lesson for scientist in #SciComm. You need to make your science easy, concrete, and relatable.

While I have yet to find them in the wild (though I haven’t been looking), you can see these wonderful flowers at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens

Anxiously waiting to see if I get good NMR data to determine the identity/structure of this blue pigment
