In Scotland, Waxcap Watch data results guide conversations with landowners on restoring & protecting waxcap grasslands in key areas like the Cairngorms National Park.

For Waxcap Watch surveys, data informs local conservation. In Wales, findings are shared with Natural Resources Wales, fungus groups, & other experts for investigation.

That said, there is a recognised need for greater standardisation of data processes and flow across schemes and projects to make the most of the information being captured by various groups across the UK and at different resolutions.

This means NPMS data can be accessed for research, education, and public information, and is generally available for reuse under the Open Government Licence, except in exceptional cases where data are sensitive.

All NPMS data flows through iRecord, where it is verified by experts, and is then published annually via the NERC Environmental Information Data Centre. It is also made available through the NBN Atlas and associated UK portals (such as NBN Atlas Scotland).

Thank you for highlighting this important issue. Plantlife helps deliver the National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS), which works to make data widely accessible while protecting sensitive species in line with UK conservation guidelines.

🌱 The Minister for Nature Mary Creagh responded to our letter.

👏 And we’ve heard that the UK Government is planning to review the definition of irreplaceable habitats in national planning policy in England!

This is a great step forward! But the momentum doesn't stop there. (2/3)
