There is a member of our department who (along w/spouse & kids) make a giant batch of fudge each Dec. They package the fudge into boxes & distribute to their places of work/school. I call her the fudge fairy 🧚‍♂️ this year’s batch was excellent!

Wish I could send you some but it does not last long 😋

This is reckless and wasteful of paper resources—it is 2025, this should be electronic. But then again, @TIAA felt decades behind in 2004–maybe they are choosing to remain behind the times.

It is one of those things where eating your mistakes is nourishing.

Dated a guy in college whose mom made the best stuffed grape leaves. (Mom was Kurdish) in hindsight, I should have spent more time in their kitchen.

The validation process includes reproducibility & reliability testing of all reagents, analyses, sample types, & by default the technician and equipment. AND testing for sample-specific contaminants & common user errors to test for assay robustness.

Technicians undergo training & repeated proficiency testing. But technical errors can happen, this is why there are controls along the way. One useful control is a normalizer—a molecule that is measured for abundance along side of the analyte of interest. Ratios are calculated to account for error.

There is always an expected value, and multiple control samples. These assays are validated to a different level than basic research. There is no way to get testing approval without knowing the range of output, as well as to have exhaustive quality control measures, proficiency testing, and audits.

I had this sticker, but offered it to a coworker who needed a boost that day. But I still have this one. A timely reminder to protect the sky from egomaniacs who want to own the sun, moon, stars, and planets.

Commercial/clinical labs are very different from research labs. Testing is too expensive to run duplicates. If there is an issue, that sample can be run a second time. Why pay 2X on all samples if less than 1% fail? We are RIGID about our calibration/specs & assay thousands of samples a year.

We already train more scientists than can be absorbed in academia AND industry. No one cared about the brain drain before this administration. Science is survive.
