2 decades ago my place of employment used @TIAA for retirement accts-I was underwhelmed. @uwseattle selected to replace our accounts with TIAA. Today I received two 11x8.5 glossy magazine-like mailers. The kicker—my personal informal—acct numbers, contributions, beneficiaries, are in these mailers.

Fall in the PNW means spider season🕷️Paired with an early morning run in the dark means I cannot see the webs that formed overnight. Nothing quite gets your heart racing like the feeling that you just picked up a spider because you were the first to pass through the web this morning 😱

LOVED Never Flinch by @stephenking.bsky.social. The afterword hits hardest: a reminder that ‘pro-lifers’ rally under the promise of life, yet their reality has delivered death.

Seattle bus drivers are under appreciated. I am sitting near the front of the bus and overheard this morning’s update — description of a missing person. What to look for in potential companion, last seen location, etc. This is on top of getting passengers to their destinations.

Waiting for the #Indy500 to start, but of course there is a rain delay. Probably should go for a run instead….

I am traveling through the Detroit airport to attend a funeral. I am wearing a mask as I am in day 9 of either the flu or RSV. The combo of my mask & my computer caused a sensitive elderly couple to storm off in a huff. Midwest peeps, you are a special kind of people 🤦‍♀️

Lab peeps-where do you purchase your primers & probes? As an assay developer, I have tested a number of oligo manufacturers. Key features I look at: performance, price/value, contamination (yes, companies send out contaminated oligos), fluorophore & quencher options, & turnaround time.

This is an opportunity for departments to have honest and frank discussions about indirects and how they are utilized. Sadly, I have seen individuals who exploit the system and far more who just look away and remain silent.
It can be simultaneously true that indirect spending needs oversight and reform while also being true that slashing spending immediately and arbitrarily is catastrophic. Private industry can't even operate at 15%.

8-ish years ago I got strangers to pay off $300k in “lunch debt” so kids who were being punished for owing money could do things like eat, go to prom, and, walk at their own graduation. In the 20 years I’ve engaged in social media, I have never received more hate for anything else I’ve said or done.

As someone who has characterized antisense transcripts at gene loci, I am excited by this work. Nicely done! Sadly, their bulk RNA approach does not rule out transcriptional interference at bidirectional loci, as it cannot measure transcriptional timing. It is a step forward in knowledge

For my entire 🧪scientific career, my proposals have been written with original thought/words/ideas. Today, my collab revised my text, adding a restatement of the funding announcement, basically “we propose to (insert exact words from announcement)”. I am horrified but suspect they will be funded🙄

Way to go Invitae! This test is needed, but there is a persistent hurdle to adoption. Health providers may not see the need to screen patients until they have symptoms 🤦‍♀️ & insurance companies may not pay for the test unless there is family history 😡 www.insideprecisionmedicine.com/topics/oncol...
