Humanity. Earth. Between and Beyond. Living in #ArlingtonVA but dreaming of Scotland. THEN: broadcast news & desktop software maven. NOW: spiritual teacher ( #Celtic #contemplative) & #NativePlants enthusiast. She/her/us.
Thinking about the dedicated journalists of 60 Minutes, both on camera and off, what a gut punch this is for them, and what tough decisions must lie ahead.

Homeowner accomplishment of the day. Re-anchored baby gate at the top of the stairs. I’m 95% sure the RHS is in the stud. FWIW, this angle gate from KidCo is the only one I could find that would fit our configuration.

Forgot that we also always buy another box of Barry’s decaf tea at Irish Eyes.

I’m very pleased with this darning job on my favorite fingerless glittens, restoring them to service.

If you live in the Washington, DC, area or visit soon, don’t miss The Stars We Do Not See: Australian Indigenous Art. You’ll never see anything like it unless you actually travel to Australia (to which the exhibition offers a heartfelt invitation.) On thru Feb.

The loss of the CDC as a reliable source is devastating. Once a jewel in America’s crown of scientific expertise, it will be very hard to rebuild.

$1500 tuition for a series of online videos? Is that normal for senior-level training of current government employees? Paid by employee or agency?

Quite magical, especially when the wind blew and the image began to pulse on its own (about 10 seconds into the video). 2/2

I’ve always enjoyed kaleidoscopes, but the last place I expected to encounter them was outdoors, in a garden — 3 very high quality instruments at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, aimed at a dish of brightly colored succulents. Video in 2nd post. Locator photo in comments. 1/2

Along an otherwise ordinary outdoor passageway, a single limestone block held a rich collection of fossil leaf impressions! I delighted in sharing it with a family passing by and watching the young girl quickly find as many leaves as I’d noticed. 4/4

A few paintings stopped me in my tracks — Courbet’s grotto vortex, the spectres in the Manet streetscape, and the unsettling quality of the Cezanne, where each of the vessels is painted from a slightly different point of view, almost like a preview of the Cubists’ overlapping viewpoints. 3/4

I’ve been in love with Barbara Hepworth’s work since I was a teenager. (I’ve visited her studio in Cornwall and the Pier Art Gallery in Orkney.) But I’d never seen one of my favorites, “Figure for a Landscape”, from these vantage points until today. 2/4

Spent the afternoon at The Getty Center in Los Angeles. As many times as I’ve been there, I still find art works that move me for the first time and viewpoints that I never noticed before. Hope you find something to enjoy among the images I captured. 1/4

Finally, a judge who clearly delineates the current regime‘s unconstitutional assault on the First Amendment AND also is determined to find a remedy, not just issue an opinion. More of this, please.

I chose to give to Arlington Thrive because they provide both emergency assistance and long-term support. Hoping some neighbors are able and willing to join me. Donation link: givebutter.com/Bp56dE

But what about our local pro rugby team? @oldglorydc.bsky.social had a couple of seasons at Catholic U but has played the last few years at family-friendly venues in VA and MD that weren’t not so accessible by public transport.

U.S. health insurers’ trade association announced yesterday that any vaccine recommended by ACIP as of Sep 1, 2025 (inc. COVID) will be covered without copay through 2026, effectively pre-empting whatever ACIP decides at this week’s meeting.

This is probably my last #NativePlants bloom report for the year (Round 8), as we’re waiting only for the final asters, and they’re a little camera shy. But we have early goldenrod, white wood aster, blue stem goldenrod, and late boneset. 1/2

Strategy almost backfired. I had to get out my “power tool” (aka bamboo spade) to get the 3’ tall hornbeam out of the ground. Its tap root is already half its height! Have posted it in Virginia #NativePlant swap group. Hope it finds a good home.
