This was a fun mystery to explore with PJ. Have a listen if you are looking for a podcast not about… (gestures around at Rome burning).
A small group of Americans becomes convinced they’ve discovered something strange about their iPhones: a forbidden phrase the phone will refuse to transmit. A crack podcasting team searches for answers, wherever they may lead.

A group of teenagers agrees to allow a filmmaker to record the things they do on their phones for a year-long experiment. To see the world they see through their phones, to encounter their algorithms. The results are honest, and pretty upsetting. open.spotify.com/episode/47Jq...

Oh this would be a great time to tell you about one of the best podcast episodes I’ve ever heard, which was when @jeisinger.bsky.social explained the origins of the income tax (among other tax things) to @pjvogt.bsky.social on Search Engine.

Trump: "From 1789 to 1913, we were a tariff-backed nation and the US was proportionately the wealthiest it has ever been ... then in 1913, for reason unknown to mankind, they established the income tax."

1/ Congress passed income tax amendment in 1909. Why?

-Wealth & inequality had exploded

-Tariffs and excise taxes were deeply unfair & regressive

-Govt was growing b/c it was doing new things like keeping food safe
Trump says the US was proportionally the richest it ever was in late 1880s/early 1900s, before in 1913 establishing the federal income tax "for reasons unknown to mankind" (??), which led to the Great Depression, which "would never have happened if they stayed with the tariff policy" (???)

Thanks to @pjvogt.bsky.social for having me on the Search Engine podcast. I had a great time talking about William and Mildred Wells, two major figures in AIR-BORNE. Why they were forgotten says a lot about how science actually unfolds. www.searchengine.show/listen/searc...

This Search Engine epi is an insightful take on AI and what it means for kids growing up with written text shockingly low on the list of consumed media.

The kids are alright, but how do we compete for their attention against the industrial-strength dopamine loops of YouTube + online games?
