I work on and write about design systems. Purveyor of fine typos.
I'm working on an programmatic tool for creating blog post "covers". This example is the by-product of four separate processes to go from bitmap image to SVG. It was a pain in the butt–I like it though.

Something I've been tinkering on.

And it's dropped. It Makes Noise for Mac is available.

Woke up way too early for our daughter's soccer tournament in Ripon. Arrived to this scene.

It Makes Noise 1.08 is out with new sounds and new sidebar iconography. I finally had to break down and design my own icons. So, you're welcome and/or I'm sorry.

Wait, what?

The writing app project continues. I took a little time just sanding down the rough edges and it's already made a huge difference. A little goes a long way.

I don’t know if higher praise could be given.

Hey all, I made an app. It makes noise. Noise for sleep, noise for focus, noise for whatever. I name the app It Makes Noise. Because, duh.

You can check it out here: apps.apple.com/us/app/it-ma...

I'm making an app that does what it says–and that's it.

It Makes Noise makes noise–for focus, for relaxation, for sleep. Really, for whatever.

We're close to release and opening up testing to the public. All you need is an iPhone/iPad with iOS 18+

Hey, I'm back (for a bit).

I'm making a new app. It makes noise. Noise for focus, noise for relaxation, noise for sleep.

The app is called It Makes Noise.

It's not that far from being ready for release. Hit me up if you're interested in beta testing.

The new transition is much more subtle and less CPU intensive. Funny enough I didn't see that play out in the debugger when I recorded these samples, but it *feels* snappier.

I also just think it looks nicer.

This was the prior treatment. The cover got a blur/scale treatment on scroll. It was pretty brutal on the CPU and perf could spike to well over 90% at times. Frame drops were common in low power mode.

Turns out Joshua Tree National Park is pretty. Who would have guess? pjonori.photo/journal/2025...

I don't typically shoot in color, but the desert is making it unavoidable.

Man, the things you see if you just look down.

Small enhancement to It Counts Layers. The plugin now embiggens based on width/height breakpoints.

It's been a hot minute since I've updated my music app, but I'll be releasing a new version with "tucked in" features such as skipping songs in an album and additional library sort methods.

Close enough, I guess.

Photography has been one of my most formative influences related to design systems. Looking back, some of my biggest design system lessons came from photography.

And I just received another lesson from photography on consistency vs uniformity. I brush upon it here - pjonori.photo/journal/2024...

And that's where I'd say consistency comes into play. Consistency can still recognize and account for context, but done so in predictable and logical ways.

To me, consistency is the middle ground between pure uniformity and disorder.
November 27, 2024 at 12:03 AM
Uniformity doesn't take context into account. But letting context dictate without overarching rules and constraints leads to disorder.
November 27, 2024 at 12:03 AM
Consistency gets a bad reputation and I think that's because people conflate it uniformity. Uniformity–remaining the same in all cases and at all time-is what happens when consistency jumps the shark.

Uniform stays the same, always, no matter what.

I keep taking a photo of the same place on High Street in Oakland. But every time it's a completely different scene.
