I think they were officially called “luggage bars”, but they’re meant to protect the back row windows and top of the seat backs from shifting cargo or luggage. You can get them for Type 3’s, too. Sometimes they’re diagonal across a bottom corner of the window.

I should also mention that I think it is the newest car I’ve seen with factory ashtrays and cigarette lighters.
