This sounds like something I would like to do. I'd love to talk about what would make sense in terms of design for this

If anyone ever wants to gaze into RPG design brilliance, especially if you want to design with intent towards how players actually play ttrpgs, read and play GURPS Goblins. You won't regret it.

One of these days, I'm going to make a modern non-GURPS version of it.

Except now the hilarious fact that they produced an RPG that they didn't even use for their own new campaign makes me think the entire company is just a scam-y joke

Maybe everything they produce is the best RPG content ever made, but I have never seen any evidence of that or any reason to delve into it to find out.

Meanwhile, every Dimension 20 trailer makes me antsy for it to come as quick as possible. Maybe Critical Role just needs better trailers

Even seeing clips of the mini campaign where Brennan Lee Mulligan and the delightful Lou Wilson playing, nothing about it was enticing whatsoever. Even Brennan's GMing had a distinctly different style than his normal Dimension 20 stuff

The only time I tried was to watch the first episode which sounded like old robots running out of power streamed through a dialup modem using a single microphone underwater across the room.

I even like some other actual plays with Matt Mercer as a player. I enjoy Brennen as GM on Dropout

If, for some reason, they won't engage with any risk you throw at them but they aren't having anxiety or similar issues, then they may just not realize how their choices are affecting the dynamics of the group. Have a conversation with them. You know, like a person.

If, for whatever reason, you try this and the player doesn't engage still, then they're having a personal issue.

Maybe they're having a bad time personally, at which point you need to stop whining and check in with them. See how they're doing.

If, for some reason, it seems too difficult to do this in the game you're playing, then you're playing the wrong game.

Not sure why this wouldn't be possible in a game, but many games are punishing and don't care about the character's personal goals.

Literally all you need is to know what they care about and engage with that. That's it.

If it feels like the pacing needs to have risk, then that engagement becomes a threat. Otherwise, it can be player-driven.

Like, this is just a play style. Yeah, it's probably informed by other (bad) games (coughDnDcough) they play or other (bad) GMs they've had. Or it could just be a personality thing or anxiety thing.

Either way, it's trivial to work around.

With how many people are agreeing with this sentiment, I’m at a loss. I don’t get people.

I guess give me all your defensive players cause we’ll have a fun time together.
