This weekend marks the 4th anniversary of the death of popular RTÉ @2fm.rte.ie DJ Simon Young. Simon, whose real name was Thomas Meade, began his broadcasting career in the Dublin pirate scene. Listen here to our recordings of him on the Big D in the late 1970s.

On this day in 1986, a small #Dublin #pirate called Big Beat Radio closed down after just 2 months. Few people will remember Big Beat but it matters to us because the founders of Pirate.ie were among the kids who set it up. Listen here to the closedown of Big Beat Radio.

On this day in 1983, the #Dublin #radio scene was hugely reduced following the shock #raids on the larger pirates Radio Nova and Sunshine Radio. The stations left on air broadcast messages and phone calls from concerned listeners.

Today's recording is of popular Sunshine Radio DJ Tony Dixon (RIP) presenting his soul programme on the Dublin #pirate station in 1982. Tony died prematurely in 2010 after a long and distinguished #radio career.

On this weekend in 1981, a new pirate station called KELO began broadcasting from north Co. Dublin. Although short-lived, KELO broke the mould with minimal talk and many talented DJs were heard on the air. Listen here to our recordings of KELO.
