2/2 Are the Americans ready for this, decades of facing and admitting that it were THEY who were responsible for the crimes of Trump, his administration, and now the US military? Rapes, theft, murder?
This is the hard part. I wish it could be different.

1/2 No, this is not "Trump's legacy". This is the legacy of the Americans who voted for him. 50%+
This legacy will not disappear magically after the next election. Just as the Nazi crimes did not disappear after Hitler was dead. For decades the Germans were living the reality that "it were us!".

Having a whole military chain of command facing 15+ years of prison for murder, in case you lose elections, may go a long way to ensure you never lose elections.

2/2 Here in Poland in a high school I had to read and discuss, for half a year, a series of books, driving the point that in extreme situations only that 5% remain "human". Mainly concentration camps survivors memoirs. Part of "what Nazism means" education by my Polish literature teacher.

1/2 Yep. I think that the sobering truth is that what we deem "civilization, well-evolved-morality etc" is ingrained only in maybe 5% of population. The rest is fairly neutral - not intrinsically bad ("Lord of Flies" author was revealed as a psycho) - but easily sways into bad directions.

We wonder how come Rusian soldiers at the Ukrainian front follow suicidal orders from their abusive drunk thieving commanders. But a whole command chain of the US Navy followed an illegal "kill them all" order, knowing it would cost them 15+ years in prison for murder. Food for thought.

Far echoes of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blomber...
The evil genius of Hitler was that the junior generals who accepted promotions HAD to forfeit their professional honor. By accepting they betrayed their unfairly accused mentors.
So they were Hitler's men now. This moral serfdom comes up in memoirs.
