i used black-and-white film with the Pop Cam because i thought that would be funny, but it won't be developed for a few weeks, so in the meantime, here are some shots from a disposable camera that i apparently took on a family vacation 20 years ago and never got developed. #shittyCameraChallenge

i found another shitty camera for the #shittyCameraChallenge and a bunch of very expired film. so look forward to that i guess!
a small plastic Diana Mini camera, mostly black with blue on top, sitting in front of the shiny box i found it in. next to it are about 7 rolls of film in plastic cases, stacked on top of each other in the lid of the shiny box. the back of the Diana Mini camera in the previous photo. part of the case is removed so i can load film into it. there's a little hinged rectangle of plastic in the middle of the camera, with some thin metal bits sticking out to hold the film more securely. on the plastic rectangle is written "Finally: Change!". if only, Diana, if only.

i missed #ArtAdventCalendar yesterday, so here are two: my "covid blanket", which i made in 2020 from miscellaneous yarn i already had, and a mobius strip toy i made for a friend's kid.
a large square crochet blanket on a bed. the blanket starts with a central square and expands outwards, changing colors in every row. the rows are made of diamond-shaped clusters of stitches. a donut-shaped crochet toy made of pastel-colored yarn. the donut is actually a 3d mobius strip -- it's made of one long strip of fabric connected to itself in a twisted way.

The House and Senate are back in session. Let's tell them not to throw trans and queer people under the bus. If they don't stand up for us, we'll stand up for ourselves! I wrote down my thoughts on this (in 4 parts below so I can alt-text it). Make your voice heard!

LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back A threat to human rights is not a distraction. Refusing to stand up for human rights isn't politically savvy, a smart compromise, reaching across the aisle, or going high when the opposition goes low. It's a way to get your constituents (and, incidentally, fellow human beings) hurt or killed, and it's a way to lose the next election *hard*. "We're not going back" means "we're not letting Republicans drag us back" and also "we're not letting Democrats let Republicans drag us back". My birth certificate says "female". It's wrong. I'm nonbinary. I'm not infrequently mistaken for a man, and I'm not going to change the way I dress or the way I live to prevent that. Nancy Mace has proposed a hateful bathroom bill, which would ban trans and nonbinary people from using the correct bathrooms on federal property (as well as cis people who don't "look like" their genders, according to self-appointed bathroom cops). If this bill passes, I will be less safe. I could be beaten or killed for going into the "wrong" bathroom. This bill has been called a distraction. It's not. It's a lot worse. Sure, Republicans are trying to force us to focus on something other than the political agenda we want to push forward. Instead of talking about climate change, universal health care, immigration, the cost of higher education, or any other issues that we could make real and tangible progress on, we have to stop them from dragging us backward into fear, misery, and pain. (1/4) I hate that they're making us do this. I hate that humans are constantly throwing ourselves into holes and then having to climb back out instead of spending our energy building new and beautiful things. I get the impulse to call this a distraction because you don't want to talk about it. You don't want to rehash a fight over something that should have been settled by now: all people are people, including trans people, and they have the same inherent worth and dignity that all people have, and they should be treated as such by society and the law. But calling this a distraction minimizes it. It's technically true, if you squint at it, but it's not a good description of what's happening. You know what else this tactic technically fits the definition of? Terrorism (n.): The use of violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political goals. (American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th edition) Yep, Republicans are engaging in terrorism. Calling it terrorism is at least as accurate as calling it a distraction -- I'd argue that it's more accurate. This isn't the first bathroom ban, but if it passes at the federal level, even more state and local bans will follow. In fact, one already has: last week, Ohio governor Mike DeWine signed a bill that prevents students in K-12 schools and universities from using the correct bathrooms and locker rooms. If trans rights are eroded, then LGBTQ+ rights in general, women's rights, and ultimately the rights of all marginalized groups will be under threat. People will be hurt by this bill. People will be beaten or killed because they're in the "wrong" bathroom, or because they're forcibly outed as trans when it's not safe to be trans. People will lose hope that they'll ever be accepted as their full selves, leading to suicide, self-harm, or lives that are made generally shittier for no good reason. (2/4) Other people will be emboldened to act as gender police. Bullying and assault will be (even more) normalized, seen as a patriotic and brave act or at worst a mere "distraction", another way to "own the libs". Whether or not this specific bill passes, if elected officials don't call out this tactic for what it is, loudly and clearly and at every opportunity, those elected officials will be helping to warp the national conversation about human rights. They will be helping to bend the moral arc of the universe away from justice and toward oppression. If we as a country don't fight this bill and the mentality behind it with all our strength, Republicans will take us farther backward, farther into "distractions", farther into the territory of fear, misery, and pain. We can't stop this "distraction" by ignoring it and focusing on the "real work". Protecting every human being from fear, misery, and pain *is* the real work. So, I'm asking everyone to contact the politicians who supposedly represent you and tell them we're not going back. You can start by telling your representative to not only vote against this bill but to speak up loudly for trans rights. You can ask your senator to pledge to vote against it if it passes the House. You can call your local officials and ask how they're planning to protect and support trans people in this toxic environment. Do what you can, do what feels right to you, but don't let anyone drag us back. And I'm asking every Democratic elected official (and hell, every Republican elected official, because why not) to fight this thing for all they're worth. Fight not just this hateful bill but the hateful soil it grew from. Fight the idea that some people aren't worth defending. Fight the pathetic, cowardly, and brutal tactic of threatening harm to civilians in the pursuit of political goals, i.e., terrorism. Fight for me, my friends, and the millions of Americans like us. (3/4) By the way, elected officials, you'll also be fighting for your political careers. Because if the choice is between one party that's actively trying to kill us and another party that's letting them do it, I and millions like me have two years to get a viable third option off the ground, and we will fucking well do it because our lives will depend on it. If Republicans want to play kazoos and have water balloon fights on the floor of the Senate, that's a distraction, and you can ignore them. If they want to take away people's rights and normalize violence to prevent political progress, that's terrorism. Say what it really is, and act accordingly. Or start looking for a new job. (4/4)

it's day 1 of the #ArtAdventCalendar ! here's a crochet blanket i made a few years ago.
a rainbow-colored fractal-ish crochet blanket. it starts with a yellow square, which is outlined in light blue with three small squares attached to three of the four corners. the pattern of outlining and adding squares continues in the same way through dark blue, pink-red, orange, and back to yellow. the pattern iterates many times to form the blanket.

three shitty cameras for the Shitty Camera Challenge. two are still in their plastic packaging: a "Split Cam" that lets you take two photos and splice them together (the example photo on the box shows a dog's head on a person's body) and a "Pop Cam" that takes 4 photos at once with red, green, yellow, and blue overlaid on them. the third camera is a large rectangular gray Polaroid 210, and two boxes of instant film are sitting next to it.

i made this sign for a protest when they overturned Roe v Wade, and i have a feeling it's going to get a lot of use over the next 4 to n years.
