JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOUR (1933). After having seen MR THANK YOU and CHILDREN OF THE BEEHIVE, interesting to get not another odyssey from Shimizu but a grounded melodrama, a journey in time not space, where presences echo in spaces unchanged and nothing can ever be the same again.

ME AND MY GAL. first walsh. it’s got more than enough drunken slapstick but also the kind of totalising joyousness of Ford’s 30s comedies (it shared writers with DOCTOR BULL and PILGRIMAGE) but also left hooks including a bank heist that fizzes like the ones in michael mann’s THIEF.
