Terence Davies movies play in my head all the time. UK is still a dimmer place now though, incredibly.

Restless newborn parent sleep: dreamed someone privately showed me the new Pedro Costa short. Felt like 20 minutes of some local lads burning down a Cornish pub. At the end I thought: where were the filhas?

JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOUR (1933). After having seen MR THANK YOU and CHILDREN OF THE BEEHIVE, interesting to get not another odyssey from Shimizu but a grounded melodrama, a journey in time not space, where presences echo in spaces unchanged and nothing can ever be the same again.

NIGHT AT THE CROSSROADS (1931). Jean Renoir’s Simenon adaptation has some of the misty indeterminacy and the isolated provincial fatalism of Dreyer’s VAMPYR, which it preceded by a year

Not only did we as a family get the whole leisure centre pool to ourselves this evening, legitimately, but it was also quite literally Float Session

ME AND MY GAL. first walsh. it’s got more than enough drunken slapstick but also the kind of totalising joyousness of Ford’s 30s comedies (it shared writers with DOCTOR BULL and PILGRIMAGE) but also left hooks including a bank heist that fizzes like the ones in michael mann’s THIEF.

Last night’s dreams swimming back to me. In one I pleaded with my parents to watch Max Ophüls’ CAUGHT (1949). In another, Tim Duncan appeared to me like the giant in Twin Peaks but he had no warnings
