Jupiter’s Volcanic Moon Io. Courtesy of Nasa. "Io’s night side [left lobe] is illuminated by “Jupitershine,” which is sunlight reflected from the planet’s surface." I love the "liminal space" quality of this light.

Victor Hugo's bed, where the magic happens. Bigger than I remembered. I shouldn't have thrown shade. And also his huge initials on the chimney. Very classy.

Last night, I practiced the "View from Above" philosophical exercise. I felt overwhelmed by the strangeness & immensity of space. This morning I did a couple of drawings to try to capture the visions I had. Reminiscent of a near death experience Plutarch attributes to a certain Thespesius of Soloi:

"A kind of walking trance I have frequently had [...] This has often come upon me through repeating my own name to myself silently till, all at once, as it were, out of the intensity of the consciousness of individuality, the individuality itself seemed to dissolve and" (Alfred Tennyson) [1/2]

I am in the mood to celebrate the Universe! By which I mean reality itself, in all its mysteriousness. So, imitating the ancient catalogues of great architectural feats, I came up with a list of the Seven Wonders of Existence. In the form of an internet-friendly numbered list #philsky (1/11)

After yesterday's memorial for Helen de Cruz, I am left thinking about what we are all trying to articulate about their admirable ethos: the way they encouraged us to pursue the passions, hobbies, & projects that really interest us. In this tribute, Richard Pettigrew does a good job expressing this:

Found on my walk, a philosophical dispute in the form of an iconic graffito that stood the test of time and was never erased. The original says "God is dead", but a modification in red, like a stern teacher's correction, changes it to say "God is there".

Walking in my city, to behold explosions of colours. For instance, a tree with leaves of fire: yellow, orange, and red. And especially today, after the rain, so many raindrops glittered with sunlight: falling off of trees, or adorning the wet pavement or the tips of blades of grass.

Played #DrawSteel and had a blast. Our tutorial combat was the crossing of the shadow fold from Shadow and Bone. A shadow, a troubadour gunslinger, and a tactician, striking every shade and flying ghoul in sight.

Feeling uplifted by the Sermon on the Mount today EXCEPT THE PIGEON SLANDER! That I shall not abide. But I love the sentiment of taking your wisdom from the birds.

You mean in the sense of standing up for our ideas? It makes me think about what Freya Mathews says about Ecophilosophy; there's great potential in developing the side of philosophy that is about resisting peer-pressure, in favour of more intelligent ideals. We philosophers should be good at that!

Oh yeah, "Broicism", as people call it, is a huge ugly problem. I would love to branch out and get into Aristotle and Parmenides! On a related concern, I really liked Matthew Sharpe's conclusion at the end of his Stoic virtue article; about the usefulness of the insistence on virtue & coherence:

All of this makes me think of the fact that Descartes recommended practising crafts like knitting as a spiritual exercise, which would teach people to become more methodical. He advised studying quote-unquote "the feminine arts of embroidery" .

Science fiction is so philosophically interesting. With its use of thought experiments, it asks us to boldly examine core assumptions that few of us have dared to question. In the scene pictured here, Spock has to tell his boss that he needs a day off because he is so HORNY he might literally DIE

Incredible cover on my edition of "Around the world in 80 days". The vibe is absolutely on point, and I think that a "cuter" image would fail to capture the spirit of the book, as the character traverses the *British Empire* like he owns the world. (but don't spoil, i haven't finished it)

I will now sign my emails with the same motto as this company that advertizes in my city. Always makes me chuckle: "Utilitarianly Yours"
