C (4;10), in bed, laughing. Lights were off. What made him laugh? Thoughts in his head. I asked what he was thinking, he said "goofy was funny". About a show he was watching tonight.

As Canadian as possible under the circumstances
At Yonge & Dundas Jays fans are obeying the pedestrian scramble, as is the custom & returning to sidewalk each light cycle.

I was reading in bed (Shtulman's Scienceblind) and C came in with two of his comic books (superman and ninja turtles). 10 minutes only until he wanted to play "fight fight" but what a bliss.

Watching Peter pan, listening to the song about following the leader
Me : what's a leader?
C (4;8), without hesitation : a good guy

Daddy to C (4;7): what do you want for breakfast?
C: I don't know.
D: how about yogurt with honey?
C: no... Good try
D to K (2;6): what do you want for breakfast?
K: (~6-8s pause) good try.

Put the kids to bed, then 10pm meeting with collab from diff time zones, 5 mins in C and K woke up, looking excitedly at my camera, C telling everyone his name and showing them his toys, and I could barely hear anything. Scary world right now but kids are still kids.

Happy holidays. Going from 29C in SG to -15 in Ontario. The kids are loving it.

C at 3;10, started "threatening" or "punishment talk" today.

C and K play fight in bed. Daddy turned off music and said it's bedtime. C said "Im not gonna play games with you anymore. I'm gonna play games with mommy!"

Daddy and C are vid games buddies. Ouch.

C playing video games. I said "five more minutes" he said "no, one more minute!" 😂 Sure. Same thing at the pool. He counterproposed 5 mins with "two more minutes". When asked which number is bigger, 5 or n? He said "five" when n < 5 but when n is larger than 5, unrelib responses.

Just told C that he will be a grown up one day. I broke him. He looked shocked. Paused for a while then asked "whats after grown up? A baby?" I said then he will get older and be like grandma grandpa, after a couple of rounds, "what about after great grandpa? A person?"

Consent forms are no longer written to be read by participants. 4 pages long single spaced for behavioral studies. When will they stop getting longer?

Measurement, qualitative methodologies, and research impact - three things I found missing in psych communities that are v prominent in education. (reflecting on my last 6 years at an Ed school in SG)

Finally, someone asked "whose children are they?" 誰家的孩子?while I was in an elevator with C and K.

Not sure how much C and K pick up on the attention they get when we are out and about, the eyeing, the mumbling, the comments.

C came home with the monthly inquiry project. Topic was on breakfast. Parents shared pics of what their kids ate on padlet. First pic: kid eating durian...

Here's tornado C with his cheerios and milo. Cheerios are almost 3x more expensive than in Canada. Only our second time getting it in SG.

Things that make me excited late at night, other than "me time with a glass of wine" are findings that make sense but also leave you much to wonder, like this one on number word training,

New AMPPS paper on coding open-ended data. Coding open-ended data is common in psychology (~20% of published papers include it), but authors rarely provide sufficient information to assess its validity or replicate its results. We provide suggestions. osf.io/preprints/ps... 1/6

Baby K started going to full-time daycare on July 1. Since then, I finished one book (Celeste Ng's Everything I never told you, which made me cry), whole fam felt terribly sick twice, and I submitted three long overdue R&Rs. Happy Friday.

The two little monkeys.

Does anybody know of work that looks at when children understand the word "half"? @mclstrainee.bsky.social I know of older work on Spinillo & Bryant, Singer-freeman & goswami
