Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.

As an English teacher, I taught a unit on the Diary of Anne Frank. The question the students constantly asked was some variation of, “But, how did Hitler get the whole country to go along with him?” I never felt like I had a good answer.
I get it now.
