Well if that's not worth a trillion dollar compensation package I don't know what is

I need to read more carefully. For some lazy or irrational reason I thought this was about the UK. It makes even less sense WRT a landlocked country...

Best I can do is google that, I don't understand the reference.

But to witter on about my fellow USians and their parochial beliefs about the UK and (Western) Europe, I've spent a lot of time all over both. Europe just embarrasses the US, comprehensively.

And L.A.'s relatively well-kept. The worst bits are in the Eastern half of the country. I suppose there's something naively charming about people's insisting on identifying with the nice bits, of which there are plenty. But the Rust Belt and huge swathes of the South contain horrors, for a start.

These people should try visiting their own country sometimes. Demonstrating an incredibly huge blind spot. No place on Earth depresses me more than, well, far too many places in the U.S. do. Real awfulness is absolutely ubiquitous.

Well if it helps, when you're off the lee shore of it in a gale, it's a boatal tackwater

At this rate they're all going to have to move to that military base where Trump's cabinet are hiding now.

Crikey. Betray millions of people down one day then rattle them like a sword the next.

"Alphanium" really needs to become a thing.

And how many times the cost of fully funding SNAP, just for a start, will it cost?

Reminds me of what my wife said about Schoolhouse Rock (yes, we're in that demographic cohort): "It felt like they were trying to trick me into learning."

Imagine a lawyer not knowing the difference between being pardoned and being exonerated. Hang on; you don't have to.

Why is the denomination overprinted on the art in a way that doesn't represent engraving? I mean is this 2025's hurricane sharpie moment?

I'll bet Daryl Hall regrets splitting up with her more than ever

And as for his legacy, well, the immortal line goes:

I remember when people were pointing out that Prince Phillip was not only an immigrant but a refugee. The RW retorts were all to the effect that no he wasn't he was a special case. To which the obvious rejoinder was, "yes, he's privileged. That was our point. What's yours?"

The Telegraph's approach to accuracy is like what they used to say about Colin Chapman's way of reducing weight on Lotus race cars. Remove structural members one by one. When it collapses, put the last one back. The T finds its limits by printing lie after lie, until it has to retract one.

I just realized the problem. She says "sparked joy" as if for her, all it takes is a spark. Me, I have to be heated up with the propane torch of joy for several minutes, like you have to do with a stovepipe in a mountain cabin in winter.

People forget that Trump spent most of his first term doing "rallies", to no real purpose to an audience he had long since captured. The fact that he's not doing them now may actually explain why his presidenting has become so much more destructive: this time, he's not being kept busy doing nothing.

For some reason I read that as uncluttered and was about to go all Marie Kondo on your ass
