I actually think it's extremely good and healthy to experience art that makes you uncomfortable. discomfort is not equivalent to real, tangible harm. at the very least y'all should recognize uncomfortable art's right to exist, and to carry on with your life without making it everyone else's problem.

Here's What You Can Do NOW I am absolutely pissed and disgusted at how ICE is treating our city, clearly racially profiling us and using people being Mexican as "reasonable suspicion." However, protesting isn't the only tool we have. We can and should pass a law in California that requires ICE to have a judicial warrant before they can conduct immigration enforcement on public property managed by the state or local governments. That means places like sidewalks, public transit stations, schools, hospitals, libraries, and city-owned parking lots would be off-limits unless ICE gets a real warrant from a judge. This would neuter ICE in California and would prevent further actions like what has happened recently in LA from occurring again. ICE almost never uses judicial warrants; they rely on administrative warrants issued internally by ICE. This would be a massive middle finger. Please call your state senators and ask them to consider drafting or introducing a bill like this. Some of them already have parts of this in progress, and hearing from you gives them the backbone to push it forward. My state senator is Lola Smallwood-Cuevas. I called her office and they said they were working on something like this and that they really appreciate knowing she has public backing. What just happened in LA could have been prevented or at least made much more difficult. We do not have to wait for the next outrage. We can act now. Go to this link to find your state senator and/or assembly member and demand action: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov Click on their hyperlink which will take you to their website, then scroll all the way down to their contact info and phone numbers. Ideally, call their district office. Wait until Monday so you have a better chance of speaking to a staffer. Over the weekend it will mostly be voicemail, which is still useful, and you can also follow up with an email. Just to be clear, this wouldn't ban ICE from enforcing immigration law altogether. It would require them to have a judicial warrant before conducting enforcement actions on property owned or managed by the state or local government. That includes public schools, libraries, hospitals, sidewalks maintained by the city, and public transit areas. This is completely legal and consistent with California's existing sanctuary policies like SB 54. Here's a script you can say: "Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I'm a resident of [Your City or ZIP Code]. I'm calling because I'm extremely upset about the recent ICE raids in Los Angeles. They appear to be racially motivated and are causing fear in our communities Here's a script you can say: "Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I'm a resident of [Your City or ZIP Code]. I'm calling because I'm extremely upset about the recent ICE raids in Los Angeles. They appear to be racially motivated and are causing fear in our communities. I'm asking [Senator/Assemblymember] [Last Namel to consider introducing or supporting legislation that would ban all ICE enforcement actions on public property without a judicial warrant. There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead. No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience. Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul.
