I'm old enough to have been writing about the pub trade through the Beer Orders, the 2003 Licensing Act reforms, the smoking ban in 2007 - I hope this gives the trade the boost it desperately needs, but the phrase "unintended consequences" keeps echoing www.gov.uk/government/n...
Cheers to Change: Red Tape Review Could Bring More Food, Music and Fun to Your Local
The Government is launching a fast-track review to tear up outdated licensing rules that have been holding back pubs, bars and local events and we want to hear from the people who know best: landlords...

It's well worth firing up BBC iPlayer and listening to the last five minutes of Today on Radio 4, just to hear a very serious French author promoting his new book on the origins of the universe and discuss "the beeg bong".

Well now. I’ve had worse things arrive in the post.

So when #Fullers launched Griffin Gold, there was debate about whether it was Chiswick under new branding. My Fullers advent calendar contains a bottle of each, both 3.4% ABV. I feel a head to head tasting blog post is in order. Stay tuned. You’ll be sorry you asked.

My big take out from the interview with Lisa Nandy that just took place on Today on Radio 4 about ID cards, is that 'silver bullet' is one of the most misused terms around. A silver bullet kills werewolves, or bandits if you're the Lone Ranger. It's a magic bullet Lisa hasn't got, not a silver one

Well, well. It feels a bit early, but thanks and Merry Christmas #Fullers #Asahiuk

In a prime media slot for coverage of #CaskAleWeek 2025, I was on BBC Radio 5 with Laura McGhie on Sunday morning to talk about Britain's signature beer style. For the few unfortunate souls who didn't hear it, you can find it on BBC Sounds at around 3h7m in. Cheers! www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

The M&S beer aisle is looking a bit neglected. Range revamp on the way?

So, is having a face like a slapped arse a requirement of defecting to Reform? Or merely a lifestyle choice?

Really pleased to see this one out in the wild. Beer and temperature for The Telegraph.
The temperature of beer affects its flavour in more ways than one – try these brews to see how
Cold isn’t always best – a subtle tweak to the temperature of your favourite ale can draw out its bitterness, sweetness or umami oomph

Mandelson's toast
I have granted the following urgent questions in the @houseofcommons.parliament.uk today.

From Neil O’Brien MP to ask Yvette Cooper MP, Foreign Secretary, if she will make a statement on the process for the appointment of the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United States. (1/2)
The House of Commons sits from 9.30am today.

The #OrderPaper is published each sitting day and lists the business of the House.

The fact that I still own a proper old school em rule enables me to easily confirm that this book title is printed in 110 point. In other news, I’m banned from the children’s department at Waterstone’s.
