That's what Gygax intended, generally. Priest, Thief, Warrior, Magic User. Everything else was subclasses to them. The codification of classes in D&D 2nd edition really highlights those four archetypes.

He has no right to be remembered fondly, he went out of his way to harm other people most of his adult life. He did not deserve to be shot for it, but he doesn't deserve to be treated with any more respect he ever gave to the victims of his hateful and violent rhetoric.
