I was booked to tune for him once, and upon arrival was gleefully told they he’d now started using a digital instead of his old CP80.

Nice! In fact Mabel Forty was Holst’s first crush! He wrote a piece of piano music dedicated to her. On company manuscript paper!

They also made stubby baby grands (I think a South London firm actually made them) and a good few very decent uprights. The very best had casework by H H Martyn who made ocean liner interiors and the Speaker’s Chair in the HoC. Also supplied radio and gramophones, and had a music publishing company

They were Cheltenham and Birmingham. In their heyday had over 60 retail branches. Henry Dale and Frank Forty were ex-Broadwood tuners who bought a Cheltenham music shop, changed the name and went from strength to strength. Pioneers of ‘easy terms’ they sold cheap but sturdy pianos to the masses.

I owned Dale,Forty & Co. for a decade or so. Had to sell to the Chinese due to zero government support from Sunak and @conservatives.bsky.social but part of the appeal for buying the brand was the unfeasibly indestructible nature of their old instruments. Crude, but there are thousands of survivors.
