Burning tear gas grenades have been clocked at nearly 800 deg C (1450 F), which is way hotter than most gloves, mitts, etc will ever bear. So don't pick them up.

Big linear supplies of that vintage often had a 2N3055 or several, and depending on what the supply was for either series or shunt regulation with a pretty simple reference and feedback design. Hope you figure it out.

Do you know anything about the regulator design or any kind of circuit diagram? Series or shunt regulation? PCB certainly says that the equipment is a bit "classic"
