And lament for the fact that even though we “remember” year after year, wars continue to exist around the world.

Lament for those who had to drop bombs on cities, or shoot another person in the face, as part of their job description. Lament for the governments who gave their citizens PTSD in the name of peace; peace for whom?

It never should’ve had to be that way.

Remembrance Day feels more to me like a day for lament and sorrow rather than honour and valour.

All that to say, does anyone else feel like war is just a form of socially sanctioned homicide? As someone with Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, certainly I’m appreciative of those who served in the front lines to put an end to Hitler’s antisemitic agenda; but that doesn’t mean I think it was right.

And this doesn’t even touch the irony of the fact that while Canadians fought the Nazi regime, they were engaged in just as atrocious forms of genocide and discrimination against Indigeous people back home.

Anyway.

I grew up being told that Remembrance Day was a time to both remember those who had died in war, and to honour World War I and World War II veterans in particular. My social studies textbooks made the Allies out to be the “good guys,” but… didn’t they drop bombs on cities too?

This is, essentially, how slavery, antisemitism, and other forms of discrimination and violence in any kind of foot hold.

Resmaa Menakem adds to this, noting that inflicting violence is a blowing through of our trauma onto others; whether this trauma is from our own experience, or passed down to us genetically from our ancestors.
